Dengue outbreak in Nagaland’s Dimapur and Mon districts raise concerns

First Published: 20th September, 2023 17:45 IST

The Health Department and the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) have declared dengue as an epidemic in Dimapur.

Nagaland’s Dimapur and Mon districts have been grappling with growing dengue cases since July. Dimapur has seen a surge in the number of cases to 1,670 this month from just 227 in July.

“The situation in Dimapur is particularly alarming. In the first week of September, the district reported a staggering 1670 dengue cases from 227 cases since July,” District Surveillance Officer, Dr. Kavito Zhimomi said.

The Health Department and the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) have declared dengue as an epidemic in Dimapur. This decision was made during the monthly DPDB meeting, chaired by Moatoshi Longkumer, who serves as the advisor for Labour and Employment and Skill Development, Excise, and is also the Chairman of DPDB Dimapur.

To address the shortage of blood supply, DPDB members have decided to show their support by participating in a blood donation drive scheduled for September 23.

Meanwhile, in Mon district, as of September 16, the daily number of dengue cases has surged to 50, creating a shortage of capacity for the district hospital. Out of a total of 678 dengue-positive patients, 289 are currently admitted, and 200 have been referred to healthcare facilities outside the district.

This information was conveyed by the Konyak Union, who visited the hospital along with Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong to assess the situation on September 16.

The Konyak Union has claimed that this dengue outbreak has claimed more lives in the district than the COVID-19 outbreak, although specific numbers were not disclosed. The crisis in Mon has also led to a severe shortage of medical personnel and healthcare facilities.

The communities in Dimapur and Mon are now mobilizing efforts to combat the outbreak and provide support to those affected by this health crisis.
