Incessant rainfall has wreaked havoc across Northeast India over the past 24 hours, triggering deadly landslides and flash floods that have claimed at least 23 lives across seven states. With more rain forecast, rescue operations are ongoing as authorities race against time amid widespread destruction and displacement.
In Arunachal, a car carrying two families were swept away by a landslide, killing 7 people including a pregnant woman and children. The incident took place on last night when a vehicle was caught in a landslide along the Bana–Seppa road in East Kameng district.
Late Friday night, another major landslide struck the Cabbage Garden area near Pine Grove in Ziro, Lower Subansiri district, killing two restaurant workers from Lakhimpur, Assam. Their bodies were recovered by the SDRF, ITBP, and local volunteers.
In Mizoram, five people lost their lives due to landslides and flash floods. A house in Serchhip district was swept away by a landslide at 3:30 AM, killing one person. Around 5 AM, a flash flood in Vaphai village, Champhai district, claimed three members of a family; two others survived. In Aizawl, a 37-year-old man died and another was injured when a retention wall collapsed on a labour camp.
National Highway 54 partially collapsed in the Chanmari locality, damaging six buildings and affecting around 15 families. Thirty houses in Chanmari and ten in Bazar locality remain at risk. Four people were rescued from the debris, with one person still trapped as rescue efforts continue. A bypass road has kept the route operational.
Five deaths were reported in Guwahati due to three separate landslides. In Bonda, Poonam Goswami and her two children were killed when their house, built just four months ago, was buried. In Datalpara, Dipjyoti Boro was killed in another landslide, while a third fatality occurred in Maligaon.
According to a preliminary report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have affected Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Golaghat districts, along with parts of Kamrup Metro and Cachar. Urban flooding has disrupted five revenue circles, prompting large-scale evacuations by NDRF and SDRF teams.
Two deaths were reported in Meghalaya. In Lumkyntung village under Laitkroh Khatarshnong Block, 50-year-old Klosliya Kharkongor died in a landslide that also injured two others. Earlier that day, Samborlang Tariang drowned at Wah Krot in Mawbynna Pomlalrai, under Mylliem Block.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said 25 villages across East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, and Eastern West Khasi Hills have been affected. Roads, power lines, and schools have sustained heavy damage. A landslide on the Baghmara–Moheskhola road has disrupted relief access. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired an emergency meeting with Deputy Commissioners to review the situation.
One person drowned in Jiranai village, West Tripura district, as water levels rose rapidly.
In Nagaland, a truck driver lost his life when a rock fell on his dumper truck at Pagala Pahar in New Chumoukedima on NH 29, at around 8 am on Friday. The deceased was identified as Abdul Salam Laskar.
Authorities in Manipur are on high alert as the Imphal River has crossed the High Flood Level. According to the Water Resources Department, Kangpokpi, the river’s catchment area, recorded 123 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Such levels typically result in severe flooding across the Imphal Valley. River overflows and embankment breaches have already occurred in several areas, prompting authorities to urge immediate evacuation from floodplains in Imphal city.
The situation remains grim across the region, with disaster response teams working round-the-clock. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, follow advisories, and evacuate where necessary.
