Cyclone Remal impact in Mizoram: 30 dead, 4 rescued, several missing

The death toll from the severe landslides across Mizoram, triggered by incessant rains induced by Cyclone Remal since Monday has climbed to 30, while several others are missing.

The biggest casualty was at Melthum village on the southern outskirts of Aizawl district where 15 people died as an old quarry collapsed on the residences of local Mizos and non-Mizos on May 28.

6 people died in Hlimen after their house collapsed.

3 members of a family died in Salem Veng after a portion of their house collapsed due to heavy rain and strong winds.

2 persons died in Falkawn after one house was swept away by flood waters.

While one died in Kelsih and one died in Lungsei.

Two deaths were reported from Aibawk. However, the bodies are yet to be recovered.

So far, 4 persons have been rescued.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced Rs 15 crore for victims of Cyclone Remal, with Rs 4 lakh each given as ex-gratia to the next of kin of those who died.
