Fresh Violence Rocks Manipur, Curfew Imposed, Internet Shut in Imphal Valley Districts

According to reports, security vehicles were torched and some protesters suffered injuries in the violence.

Authorities in Manipur have imposed Curfew in the Imphal valley and shutdown internet services as Large scale violence broke out late yesterday evening and continued throughout the night after at least 5 senior leaders of Arambai Tenggol were reportedly picked up by security agencies.

The leaders, according to reports, were picked up around 9 – 9:30 pm. This shattered the fragile peace that we saw in Manipur over the past few months since President’s Rule was imposed. Protesters and security forces engaged in gunfights and angry protesters were also seen past 11 PM near the Imphal airport charging at security vehicles.

According to reports, security vehicles were torched and some protesters suffered injuries in the violence.

The leaders were apparently picked up from Uripok on the basis of specific charges. Northeast Live is trying to contact the authorities for details.

Roads including those leading to the airport are blocked.

Meanwhile, the Manipur government has suspended mobile internet and data services across Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts for five days starting 11:45 pm on Saturday. In an official order, Home Secretary N Ashok Kumar cited concerns that social media could be misused to spread hate content and provoke unrest.

The District Magistrates of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts have also imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) until further notice. Essential services and government agencies are exempted from the restrictions. According to the order, no assembly of five or more persons is allowed without prior permission. Carrying weapons, explosives, or any suspicious items is strictly banned. Additionally, all forms of public gatherings are not permitted while the order remains in effect.

Meanwhile, protestors have called a total ten days shutdown in the Imphal valley, exempting only medical services and the media. The situation is tense.
