Authorities reported that Rahul Das, a resident of Murapara in Udaipur, allegedly kidnapped the girl and fled the scene.
A local court in Udaipur,in the Gomati district of Tripura, has sentenced Rahul Das to 20 years of imprisonment for the abduction and rape of a minor schoolgirl. The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Shankar Lal Dutta following a protracted trial.
The case dates back to September 21, 2022, when a minor girl from Chandrapur, Udaipur, was forcibly taken while walking to Udaipur English Medium School. Authorities reported that Rahul Das, a resident of Murapara in Udaipur, allegedly kidnapped the girl and fled the scene.
Concerned about her prolonged absence, the girl’s father filed a complaint at the Udaipur Women’s Police Station, which prompted the police to register a case under Sections 363 and 376(2) of the IPC, alongside Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Following the complaint, an investigation was rapidly launched.
The Udaipur Women’s Police subsequently tracked down both the victim and the accused in a rented house in Dharmanagar, located in North Tripura district, leading to Das’s apprehension.
Public Prosecutor Poltu Das, said that after a long trial and the examination of 16 witnesses, the court pronounced the following sentence: Three years of imprisonment under Sections 363 and 376 IPC, along with a Rs. 1,000 fine and 20 years of imprisonment under the POCSO Act, along with a Rs. 5,000 fine.
Failure to pay the fines would result in an additional 1-year imprisonment
Public Prosecutor Das added that on the day of the abduction, Rahul Das was allegedly accompanied by his sister, maternal uncle, and a friend. However, due to a lack of evidence, they were acquitted. The investigation was notably supported by Sub-Inspector Lipika Bhattacharya from Udaipur Women’s Police Station, who played a crucial role in bringing the case to a resolution.
