Counting Underway for Assam Panchayat Polls Amid Tight Security

First Published: 11th May, 2025 11:31 IST

The elections, held in two phases on May 2 and 7, were the first since the recent delimitation of constituencies.

Counting of votes for the Panchayat elections in Assam began on Sunday morning amid tight security. Officials expect the process to take at least a couple of days due to the use of paper ballots.

Counting for the Panchayat elections in Assam, one of the most closely watched local polls, began at 8 AM. Votes are being tallied for 373 Zilla Parishad (ZP) seats, 2,192 Anchalik Parishad (AP) seats, and 21,920 Gram Panchayat (GP) seats across 27 districts.

The elections, held in two phases on May 2 and 7, were the first since the recent delimitation of constituencies. A total of 1.80 crore people were eligible to vote, with a turnout of 74.71% recorded across the two phases. The first phase on May 2 covered 14 districts, while the second phase on May 7 included 13 districts.

Officials expect the counting to take time due to the sheer scale of the ballot-based exercise, with thousands of seats at stake. Security has been tightened at all counting centres to prevent any disruptions, following reports of sporadic violence during the voting.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led alliance has already secured a strong early lead, winning 348 seats uncontested. Independents have won 15 AP seats unopposed, while the Congress and AIUDF have taken 9 and 1 AP seats respectively without a contest.
