The 15-hour total shutdown in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district called by Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) Sadar Hills began this morning at 6 AM. The bandh, called to mark fifth-month of unrest in the state, would go on till 9PM today.
Following the commencement of the total shutdown, shops and various other business establishments in Kangpokpi District Headquarters including Nute Kailhang or Mother’s Market, the largest market in the town, were seen closed.
The National Highway-2 wore a deserted look as vehicular movement has also come to a standstill, except emergency services exempted from the purview of the total shutdown.
CoTU’s main programme to mark fifth-month of turmoil in Manipur will take place at 2:30 p.m at Brig. M. Thomas ground at the district headquarters.
Altar for the Kuki-Zo community, the dedication of the coffin and display of coffin rally, candlelight vigil, and paying tribute to the Kuki-Zo martyrs will be the main highlights of the event.
CoTU has also imposed another total shutdown along the National Highway-37 since 4 PM of October 2 in connection with the alleged abduction of a Kuki-Zo individual by armed miscreants on September 30 in the New Keithelmanbi area. The shutdown is to demand the safe release of the abducted man.
