CoTU Extends Total Shutdown in 3 Hill Districts By 24 Hours, Calls for Mass Protest Over Tribal Rights

As part of the protest, CoTU has also called for a mass public demonstration at Kangpokpi District Headquarters.
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has intensified its agitation, extending the ongoing shutdown in three hill districts of Saitul, tengnoupal and Kangpokpi by another 24 hours, citing the Government’s alleged neglect of Kuki-Zo tribal rights and dignity. The initial 12-hour shutdown, which started at 2:00 PM on January 2 and ended at 2:00 AM on January 3, failed to garner any response from the authorities, prompting CoTU to escalate its protest.
The extended shutdown will now last from 2:00 AM on January 3 to 2:00 AM on January 4. As part of the protest, CoTU has also called for a mass public demonstration at Kangpokpi District Headquarters at 11:00 AM to amplify the frustration and determination of the Kuki-Zo tribal communities.
The immediate trigger for this intensified protest is the recent deployment of central security forces to Saibol in the Bungpi region of Sadar Hills’ Lhungtin Sub-Division. CoTU has condemned the move as an act of provocation, disrupting the fragile peace and threatening the community’s existence. Despite repeated peaceful appeals, the Government’s silence has only deepened the sense of neglect and injustice among the tribal population.
“This is no ordinary protest,” CoTU declared. “It is a battle for justice, a fight for the survival of our people, and a stand against the systemic erosion of our rights. We will not rest until our voices are heard and our demands are met.”
CoTU is demanding the immediate withdrawal of central forces deployed to Saibol, describing their presence as unnecessary and inflammatory. The committee has urged all Kuki-Zo people to stand united in solidarity, warning that the Government’s apathy will only strengthen their resolve.
“This extended shutdown is not just a display of defiance,” CoTU stated. “It is a testament to the unyielding spirit of our people. Justice delayed is justice denied, and we will not be silenced by indifference.”
