National People’s Party leader and Cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma has asserted that the upcoming Gambegre by-poll will be between the NPP and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The Meghalaya minister feels that the Congress is a diminishing force and has already lost significance in the Garo Hills region.

Speaking to media, Sangma said, “It was very inspiring to see people coming out in support of the NPP, but as of now, it looks like the contest is between the NPP and the TMC.”
“Congress does not have a future. At least, three sitting MLAs of their party have joined the ruling NPP. I mean, Congress has become emptied. So, therefore, I think there are no future and no hope for Congress,” Sangma added.

He also added that with Congress losing its key MLAs, voters are unlikely to back them in the upcoming election.

He also dismissed the allegations that developmental works have started very recently in Gambegre because of the upcoming bye election. Sangma said, “Had it been bye-election in Siju we would have talked about all the developmental projects that has been taken up. Had it been bye-election in Tura, the development would have been discussed. Since we are having bye-election in Gambegre, we only talk about Gambegre, it is our duty. Let us be factual people.”

Regarding the TMC, Sangma acknowledged it as a competitor but pointed out that many supporters have shifted to the NPP, valuing the party’s role in governance and development over opposition status.
Rakkam said, “It is the people’s choice, but support for Congress is not there as you would expect. Many have already joined NPP from TMC because they know voting for Congress or TMC means sitting in opposition, while voting for NPP ensures development from the government.”

Mehtab Chandee (Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s wife and party treasurer) is the NPP candidate and Dengnakpara MDC Sadhiarani Sangma is the candidate of TMC. The Congress candidate is Jingjang M Marak. The BJP is yet to announce its candidate.
