Lalduhoma revealed that his government is considering incentives for families with more than three children to encourage larger families.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday emphasised the need to boost population growth in the state, citing its sparse population density and vast available land. Speaking at the second day of Zofest 2024, held at Lalbuanga Hall in West Phaileng, Lalduhoma said, “Mizoram has enough land to accommodate more people. We need to encourage population growth, especially among the Zofate.”
The Chief Minister revealed that his government is considering incentives for families with more than three children to encourage larger families, aligning with its policy to address this demographic concern.
Lalduhoma also praised the growing unity among Zo descendants within Mizoram and across the globe. He mentioned the initiatives such as the formation of the Mizoram Council of Churches and ongoing efforts to unify nine Zo community churches in the United States.
“Several meetings have been held under my chairmanship to strengthen ties among Zo tribes in the Chin Hills and beyond,” he said, reiterating the government’s commitment to fostering harmony among Zo communities.
The Chief Minister commended the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizoram’s leading student body, for its enduring efforts to unify Zo ethnic groups. Zofest 2024, themed “Hrui khat vuanin” (Marching together as one), marks its 20th edition, drawing participants from Mizoram, neighboring states, and even delegates from the United States.
Zo Indigenous ID Launched
Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama also officially launched the Zo Indigenous ID yesterday at his office premises, an initiative by the Zo Reunification Organisation (ZORO).
This ID aims to safeguard the rights of the Zo community and facilitate easier access to cross-border regions in India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, while asserting their cultural and ancestral identity.
According to ZORO, the initiative aligns with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) 2007, and marks a significant step toward recognizing the Zo community as an Indigenous Peoples Organisation under the UN framework.
