The tourism department is still compiling data for March 2025, and officials expect the final count to be even higher.

Mizoram has recorded an extraordinary surge in tourist arrivals during the financial year 2024–2025, with the number of visitors more than doubling compared to the previous year. According to data released by the state’s tourism department, Mizoram welcomed 4,69,753 tourists between April 2024 and February 2025 , a 114.38% increase from 2,19,114 visitors in 2023–2024.

Out of the total visitors, 4,64,742 were domestic tourists, while 5,011 came from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, and Germany. The tourism department is still compiling data for March 2025, and officials expect the final count to be even higher.

Officials attribute this unprecedented growth to multiple factors such as improved connectivity, aggressive promotion through fairs and exhibitions, stronger business engagements, and better infrastructure. A senior tourism official noted that while most visitors came for business-related activities, many others arrived to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural experiences the state offers.

The department also credited the rise to improved data collection methods introduced after the appointment of an Inspector of Statistics. Tourist data is now gathered more efficiently from four main sources accommodation units such as hotels, homestays and lodges; entry and exit points including Inner Line Permit (ILP) stations at Bairabi, Vairengte, Kanhmun and Lengpui Airport; records from security agencies on foreign arrivals; and ticketed tourist destinations.

Local domestic tourism, visitors from within Mizoram who fall under the broader domestic category also contributed significantly to the overall numbers, showing that interest in local travel is on the rise.

As Mizoram gains popularity as a must-visit destination in Northeast India, the tourism department now faces the urgent task of scaling up services. The sharp rise in visitors has led to a shortage of trained tour guides and travel operators.

Tourism officials acknowledge the need to invest in capacity building, training programs, and improved infrastructure to maintain quality experiences for tourists. With its lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Mizoram is fast emerging as a shining star in India’s northeastern tourism circuit and the world is beginning to take notice.
