Chess Drama Unfolds: Carlsen, Nepomniachtchi Share Controversial World Blitz Title

The unprecedented decision was made after the duo agreed to a tie following seven grueling rounds in New York on December 31.

The chess world kicked off 2025 amid controversy, as Grandmasters Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi were declared joint winners of the 2024 World Blitz Championship. The unprecedented decision was made after the duo agreed to a tie following seven grueling rounds in New York on December 31.

This marks the first time in the tournament’s history that the title has been shared. Fans criticised the move, questioning the credibility of the event after FIDE, the global chess governing body, allowed the arrangement.

Carlsen started strong, winning the first two games of the final, but Nepomniachtchi fought back, leveling the score 2-2. Three sudden-death games also ended in draws. Carlsen then suggested sharing the title, a proposal the arbiters approved after deliberation.

“People understand we’re both exhausted and nervous. Some will like it; some won’t. That’s just how it is,” Carlsen commented after the match.

However, the decision drew sharp criticism for perceived inconsistency. Fans noted that no such option was extended in the women’s final, where Ju Wenjun defeated Lei Tingjie 3.5-2.5 to claim the championship outright. Ju also holds the women’s classical world title, secured earlier this year.

According to a report by the India Today, the controversy follows Carlsen’s withdrawal from the Rapid Championship earlier in the week due to a dress code violation. On December 27, Carlsen was fined USD 200 by FIDE for wearing jeans, deemed unprofessional attire under tournament rules. Refusing to change clothes, Carlsen withdrew, citing frustration with FIDE’s strict regulations.

After discussions with FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and a relaxation of the dress code, Carlsen rejoined the Blitz Championship on December 29, only to face further drama in the finals.

Legendary chess figure Garry Kasparov lightheartedly referenced the dress code scandal, adding fuel to the already heated debate. Meanwhile, fans continue to question whether FIDE’s decisions are consistent and fair for all players.
