South Shillong MLA and BJP leader Sanbor Shullai has said that the vehicles of Chief Minister too should be frisked to deal with the menace of drugs.

Speaking to media after a meeting with stakeholders to combat the widespread drug abuse, Shullai said, “We have suggested that we have to check even if it is the vehicle of the Chief Minister or Prime Minister or MLA or businessman or anyone both private and commercial vehicles we have to check. If we continue to check for one year, I believe and do hope we can eradicate this drug menace in our state.”
He said that everyone knows drugs are brought to Meghalaya from Myanmar and Manipur through Assam.

Pointing out that military and police personnel have also been implicated in drug trafficking, Shullai called for impartial vehicle checks across the board.

Shullai said, “That is why I have appealed to our police personnel and all stakeholders, we should work very sincere. Sincerity should be there only then we can eradicate this drug menace in the state.”

“Even military personnel were caught in drug cases. Even a few police personnel also were caught red handed with drugs. They are involved in drug trafficking. That is why I appeal to the government and all police personnel that they should work very sincerely,” he added.

Shullai further added that though the government is taking steps to address the drug menace issue but “it is still not satisfactory” adding “That is why I am calling this meeting to take all suggestions from stakeholders and will draft a resolution to submit to the CM, deputy CM and social welfare minister that we should be very serious on this issue.”

According to Shullai, comprehensive vehicle checks at key locations, including Byrnihat, Jaintia Hills, and Ri Bhoi district, are critical to curbing drug supply chains.

During the meeting with various stakeholders, including community leaders, women’s organizations, police, and the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Shullai encouraged residents to install CCTV cameras in their homes for better surveillance. Superintendent of Police (ANTF) Jagpal Singh Dhanoa discussed the legal aspects of NDPS cases, while Shullai announced that joint surprise raids would be conducted in localities as part of intensified efforts to combat the drug problem.
