Union Minister of State for Law & Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced today that the Centre has assured full financial support for completing the much-awaited Kohima High Court building at Meriema.
He made the statement during the State Mega Legal Services Camp organised at NBCC Convention Hall, Kohima by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) in collaboration with the Government of Nagaland and the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Kohima under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
Meghwal informed that he had recently met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who assured him that the Centre will provide all necessary funds to complete the High Court project. He also expressed optimism about resolving the long-pending issue of oil extraction and royalty sharing between Nagaland and Assam.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, addressing the event, called the occasion momentous and historic, highlighting the rare presence of a delegation of top Supreme Court Judges in the State. He praised the Indian judiciary for playing a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s legal and social landscape and emphasized the judiciary’s role in upholding equality and contributing to the country’s peaceful and economic growth.
Rio underlined the synergy between modern Indian law and Naga customary practices, especially in the areas of mediation, capital punishment, and forgiveness. He said mediation, which is now promoted globally as a dispute resolution mechanism, has always been a core principle of Naga customary law. He further noted that capital punishment is an alien concept in Naga tradition, while forgiveness remains a hallmark of the Naga justice system.
The Chief Minister recalled the words of former Chief Justice of India, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who had praised the Naga system for being a cost-effective and speedy dispute resolution model during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Kohima High Court in 2007.
Justice B.R. Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court and Executive Chairman of NALSA, appreciated the rich culture, traditions, and heritage of the 17 Naga tribes. He described Nagaland as the epitome of “Unity in Diversity” and lauded the state for successfully conducting Urban Local Body elections with over 33 percent participation by women. He stated that Nagaland is poised to become a pioneer in women empowerment.
Other Supreme Court Judges, including Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Mentor of NSLSA, and Justice Surya Kant also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of access to justice for all.
