These states have experienced heavy rainfall, massive flooding, and multiple landslides during this monsoon season.
In a significant move to aid disaster-hit states, the Central Government has approved Rs 1,066.80 crore as financial assistance for four northeastern states severely impacted by floods and landslides. The beneficiary states are Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.
As per the Ministry of Home Affairs, the state-wise allocation includes Rs 375 crore for Assam, Rs 29 crore for Manipur, Rs 30 crore for Meghalaya, Rs 22 crore for Mizoram, Rs 153 crore for Kerala, and Rs 455 crore for Uttarakhand.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision on social media platform X, reiterating the Narendra Modi-led government’s commitment to standing by affected states in times of natural calamities like floods, landslides, and cloudbursts. He further stated that, in addition to financial aid, the Centre continues to prioritise logistical support, including the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, and Air Force units for rescue and relief efforts.
These states have experienced heavy rainfall, massive flooding, and multiple landslides during this monsoon season.
Assam remains one of the worst affected, with 22 districts including Lakhimpur, Hojai, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong among the severely impacted. The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System in Assam indicates widespread displacement and damage to infrastructure.
In Meghalaya, the State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) reported that 1,094 people were affected across 49 villages in 10 districts. Tragically, seven deaths were recorded due to landslides and flooding.
As per reports, Mizoram has witnessed one of the most intense monsoon disasters in recent history. Between May 24 and early July, the state experienced 846 landslides and landslips, 389 road blockages, and the destruction or damage of 282 buildings. Thousands were displaced, and the situation remains grim as the state battles ongoing vulnerability to monsoon-induced disasters.
Manipur has also faced significant flood damage. Over 19,800 people were impacted in the early days of the monsoon due to overflowing rivers and breached embankments in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Senapati districts. Around 3,365 homes have been reported as damaged.
The central government has so far disbursed over Rs 8,000 crore this year through both SDRF and the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to assist various states. This includes Rs 6,166 crore from SDRF to 14 states and Rs 1,988.91 crore from NDRF to 12 states. Additionally, Rs 726.20 crore was released under the State Disaster Mitigation Fund to five states, and Rs 17.55 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund to two others.
To support the monsoon response, the NDRF has deployed 104 teams across 21 states and Union Territories to carry out rescue and relief operations.
The Centre’s comprehensive support underlines its commitment to proactive disaster management and swift relief to citizens affected by natural calamities.
