A day after the Centre and the state government signed a tri-partite peace deal with the NDFB resolving the decades long Bodoland issue, the Assam government for the first time has appealed ULFA-Independent Commander-in-Chief, Paresh Baruah to join the peace process.
Briefing newspersons in Guwahati, state finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma quoting Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Government of India will strike a peace deal if the ULFA-I leadership is willing to come overground and join the peace process.
Besides, Sarma also appealed rebel groups from Manipur to join the mainstream.
Meanwhile, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that talks with the pro-talk faction of the ULFA are at an advanced stage. However, Sarma maintained that permanent peace in Assam and Northeast is possible only if the ULFA-I shun the path of violence.
