Meghalaya: Centre adds additional 50 MBBS seats at NEIGRIHMS

Good news for the students who want to pursue a career in medicine. The Centre has decided to add 50 more MBBS seats at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Meghalaya, said Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar during her visit to the state yesterday.

The Union Minister said that from next year, the institute will add 50 MBBS seats, bringing the total annual intake to 100.

Talking to media , Dr Bharati said that NEIGRIHMS had been given additional funding since 2015 to enhance the medical college, boost MBBS seats, and strengthen the nursing college.

She stated that the Centre provides funds under different categories each year to strengthen NEIGRIHMS.

Rs. 480 crore was sanctioned last year and Rs. 528 crore was sanctioned this year to strengthen the institute, the Minister added.

She welcomed the institute’s efforts to improve the radiotherapy treatment unit, among other facilities.

The MOS Health also reviewed the health care sector in the state.

The review meeting was held in presence of Meghalaya Health & Family Welfare Minister, Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh with officials of the Health & Family Welfare Department.

Speaking about the implementation of schemes under the National Health Mission, Dr. Pawar stated that the fund granted to Meghalaya this year through the NHM is roughly Rs 600 crore, with 90 percent coming from the center and 10 percent coming from the state.

She further stated that the funding to address the pandemic under Emergency Covid Relief Package-1 was Rs 25 crore for Meghalaya, and Rs 117 crore was granted under Emergency Covid Relief Package-2. The central government is granting Rs 150 crore to Meghalaya under the 15th Finance Commission to strengthen Sub Centres and Health and Wellness Centres.

Dr. Pawar also called on Governor of the state, Phagu Chauhan and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
