CBI Arrests NEHU Dean and Guwahati Businessman in Rs 3.43 Lakh Bribery Case

The arrests were made when the bribe money was being exchanged at Guwahati University Guest House.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Guwahati, has arrested two individuals, including a senior academician from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, and a businessman from Guwahati, in a bribery case involving Rs 3.43 lakh.

Among those arrested is Nirmalendu Saha, Professor of Zoology and Dean of School of Life Sciences, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and Pranjal Sharma, the proprietor of a private firm based in Guwahati. The arrests were made when the bribe money was being exchanged at Guwahati University Guest House.

The CBI registered a case on 11 June 2025 based on source information that the businessman, the NEHU professor, and others were engaged in corrupt practices. The professor allegedly received bribes in exchange for awarding supply orders related to scientific equipment and laboratory items, as well as facilitating the clearance of bills.

A trap was laid by the CBI, and the accused were caught red-handed during the transaction. They were set to be produced before a Competent Court in Guwahati yesterday.

Search operations were conducted at two locations, resulting in the recovery of incriminating documents. A further search is currently underway. The investigation is ongoing.
