Ratul revealed that he had been mentally disturbed for a long time, allegedly due to continuous verbal abuse by the elderly woman.
In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves through Guwahati’s Kharghuli area, a 69-year-old woman was brutally murdered by one of her own caretakers.
The victim, identified as Bandana Das, was found dead in her home early yesterday morning, a case that has now taken a grim turn with a shocking confession.
According to police sources, Ratul Das, one of the two caretakers employed to look after Bandana Das, has admitted to committing the heinous crime.
During interrogation, Ratul revealed that he had been mentally disturbed for a long time, allegedly due to continuous verbal abuse by the elderly woman. He claimed that Bandana would frequently insult him and his family, including making derogatory remarks about his young child — something that left him emotionally wounded.
On the night of the incident, Ratul had returned home inebriated. Consumed by anger and emotional turmoil, he lost control and strangled Bandana Das before fatally slitting her throat with a pair of scissors. This gruesome detail was disclosed during his confession to the police.
Suspicion initially arose when the victim’s room was found unlocked. Police detained both caretakers Ratul Das and Kunjalata Das but it was Ratul who eventually confessed to the murder.
The incident has deeply unsettled the local community, especially given that the violence occurred in a setting built on trust. It has sparked urgent discussions about the vulnerability of the elderly and the pressing need to address mental health issues among caregivers.
Further investigations are ongoing, with more updates expected in the coming days. Authorities have emphasised the importance of vigilance in domestic caregiving arrangements.
