Captain Williamson Sangma University to Launch Tribal Studies Department to Protect Meghalaya’s Endangered Languages

To ensure a smooth rollout, the Vice-Chancellor has been directed to prioritise the formation of key departments and academic programs.

The newly established Captain Williamson Sangma State University in Meghalaya is set to open a Department of Tribal Studies to safeguard and promote the state’s endangered dialects and tribal languages.

This new development was informed by Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, who emphasised the department’s role in preserving Meghalaya’s cultural heritage through education and research.

Minister Rakkam A. Sangma said, “the university plans to commence academic classes in 2025, with the affiliation process for colleges starting immediately.”

To ensure a smooth rollout, the Vice-Chancellor has been directed to prioritise the formation of key departments and academic programs.

“In addition to academic initiatives, efforts are underway to enhance the university’s infrastructure. A proposal for land allocation at New Shillong Township is being prepared for the establishment of a dedicated campus,” Rakkam A. Sangma added.

Moreover, the process of securing All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approval is in progress, signifying a major step forward in the university’s operational plans.
