Sikkim’s recently launched opposition party, Citizen Action Party (CAP) has rubbished the judicial probe committee set up by the Sikkim Government today to probe the death of student leader Padam Gurung and termed it as a delaying tactic. CAP chief coordinator Ganesh Rai questioned the involvement of the government in the alleged murder of the student leader.

Addressing the media within hours of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announcing the setting up of the judicial inquiry committee, Rai asserted, “We were waiting for the SIT report to come through, then again Government declares independent judicial inquiry. This is a delaying tactic. There is a lot of public anger over the issue”.

Rai slammed the government for ‘trying to save itself’ stating, “The government doesn’t want impartial facts to reach the public or investigation to happen. Sikkimese people knows this is a murder and who are involved, who is behind it. The government is trying to save itself, hence we feel the investigation should happen as soon as possible. The reason behind Padam Gurung’s death the public have a right to know, we will wait for the same”.
On the SIT report now being overshadowed by call for ‘independent judicial inquiry’, Rai further stated, “At least the SIT report should have been allowed to come. Had the report come, the family of the deceased would have been somewhat satisfied, then the judicial inquiry could have been called. Hence we have our biggest doubt upon the government. Is the government not involved in this case?”.
“After forming the Special Investigation Team, Superintendent of Police gets transferred. The way Padam Gurung’s body was found, the injury in his body, seeing all that we feel it was a murder. The government is trying to hide that,” Rai said casting aspersions on the government and clearly showing CAP’s dissatisfaction regarding the handling of the case and its probe so far.
Reasserting it’s faith on Sikkim Police, CAP chief coordinator said, “We do not have doubt on Sikkkm Police, but they are not allowed to function properly, such is the state of Sikkim Police. Government is not sincere. We are giving benefit of doubt to government, but no way Padam Gurung fell and died, this is a murder. To give justice to Padam Gurung, we will call for a Janta Adalat”.
