CAP Accuses SKM Government of Economic Mismanagement and Ignoring Sikkim-Darjeeling Unification Issue

First Published: 26th January, 2025 19:48 IST

He alleged that the SKM has failed to address the very issues it once blamed on the SDF during its opposition days.

Citizen Action Party (CAP) President Ganesh Kumar Rai accused the SKM government of failing to fulfill its 2019 election promises and criticised its handling of discussions surrounding the potential unification of Sikkim and Darjeeling. Rai alleged that the government is working under the influence of Chief Economic Advisor Professor Mahindra P. Lama, whom he accused of destabilising Sikkim’s economy.

Addressing the gathering on its third foundation day celebration in Rangpo, Rai alleged that secret discussions are underway in Darjeeling regarding two critical possibilities, the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state and the unification of Sikkim with Darjeeling.

He criticised the SKM government for its lack of urgency and seriousness in addressing this sensitive issue, which could significantly impact the state’s future.

Rai specifically pointed fingers at Professor Mahindra P. Lama, the Chief Economic Advisor to the current government, alleging that Lama is actively involved in the unification discussions. Rai claimed that Lama, who has held similar advisory positions during the tenures of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and Bhandari administrations, is orchestrating actions that destabilize Sikkim’s economy.

“Professor Lama’s actions appear to be aimed at weakening Sikkim’s economy deliberately, thereby pushing the Sikkimese people towards demanding unification with Darjeeling. He is nothing short of a slow poison for Sikkim’s economy,” Rai alleged. He went on to claim that the SKM government is functioning under Lama’s direction, further fueling economic challenges in the state.

Apart from criticising the government on the unification issue, Rai also lambasted the SKM for failing to deliver on the promises made in its 2019 election manifesto. He alleged that the SKM has failed to address the very issues it once blamed on the SDF during its opposition days.

Rai announced that CAP would actively expose the government’s shortcomings using its own manifesto. “In their 2019 election manifesto, the SKM blamed the SDF government for a range of problems. After five years in power, they have failed in the same areas they once criticized. CAP will use the SKM’s own words to highlight their failures by replacing ‘SDF’ with ‘SKM’ in the manifesto,” Rai stated.
