Byrnihat’s Pollution Crisis: A Wake-Up Call for Meghalaya and Assam, Meghalaya CM Orders Urgent Audit

Byrnihat’s Pollution Crisis: Meghalaya CMa has ordered the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to conduct an urgent audit.

Meghalaya’s industrial hub, Byrnihat is now suffocating under a cloud of toxic pollutants. The thriving industrial town has become one of the world’s most polluted areas, with air quality deteriorating to hazardous levels.

According to IQAir’s World Air Quality Report 2024, Byrnihat recorded an average PM2.5 concentration of 128.2 µg/m³, far exceeding safe limits. High levels of Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) further compound the crisis, triggering alarm across government agencies.

In response, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has ordered the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to conduct an urgent audit of all industrial units within the state’s jurisdiction. MSPCB Chairman R. Nainamalai confirmed that findings from the audit will be submitted by the end of the month, paving the way for stricter enforcement.

However, the issue extends beyond Meghalaya’s borders. Many of the polluting industries lie on Assam’s side of Byrnihat. Acknowledging this, Conrad Sangma has urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for a joint intervention. Assam has already begun inspections, while Meghalaya is ramping up enforcement measures.

As regulatory teams crack down on violations, the crucial question remains will this be a decisive moment in Byrnihat’s fight for clean air, or just another cycle of hollow promises? With thousands of lives at stake, the time for action is now.
