Business Rivalry Turns Ugly: Families Attack Each Other With Swords and Rods, Many Injured

First Published: 4th November, 2024 19:34 IST

In addition to the family members, a woman renting a room in the house was also caught in the violence and got injured during the attack.

A brawl between two families in the Bholagiri area of Agartala turned into a big fight leaving several people injured and hospitalized. The attack, believed to be fueled by a long-standing business rivalry over the illegal liquor trade, took a dangerous turn when members of one family attacked another with swords, rods, and sharp weapons.

A gun too was reportedly present at the scene, though no shots were fired, police sources said.

Dr. Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police, West Tripura district, visited both the scene of the incident and GBP Hospital, where the injured victims were being treated.

He confirmed that the clash stemmed from rivalry between two groups, both involved in the illegal liquor business.

“Seven to eight individuals from the injured family, who were also reportedly engaged in the illicit trade, were attacked by members of the other family,” stated Dr. Kumar.

He further added that the police are investigating the case and will take strict action not only against those responsible for the attack but also against the ongoing sale of illegal liquor in the area.

The attack reportedly occurred late last night when Shahjahan Mia, accompanied by his associate Uttam Malar and few others, launched an assault on the family members of one Abhijit Deb.

In addition to the family members, a woman renting a room in the house was also caught in the violence and got injured during the attack.

“The situation is now under control, and further investigations are underway,” said Dr. Kumar, assuring the public that those responsible will be brought to book.
