Biren Singh Writes to Guv Bhalla, Says MHA’s 30-Day Order on Illegal Immigrants Vindicates His Efforts as CM

The former CM mentioned in his letter that instability in Myanmar has caused major influx in Manipur and Mizoram
Former Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh has said that his long-standing position on the issue of illegal immigration has been vindicated by the recent directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Biren Singh met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Tuesday evening and submitted a letter in which he expressed strong support for the MHA’s 30-day deadline for states and Union Territories to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
In the letter, Biren Singh wrote that protecting India from illegal immigrants from these two neighbouring countries has been his dream for many years. He welcomed the Centre’s move and said it comes at a crucial time for Manipur, which has long faced the brunt of cross-border migration due to its 365-km porous border with Myanmar and proximity to Bangladesh.
“The directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India mandating all States to verify immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar within 30 days comes at a crucial time. It reinforces the importance of national alignment and provides a much-needed policy thrust to address what is fundamentally a national security concern as well as a socio-cultural crisis,” Biren Singh wrote.
He outlined several steps taken during his tenure to address this problem, including verification drives, detection of illegal immigrants, and use of modern technology like satellite mapping. He revealed that under his leadership, the Manipur government identified 5,457 illegal immigrants and detained hundreds.
Biren also recalled how political instability in Myanmar, especially the 2021 military coup, triggered fresh waves of migration into Indian states like Manipur and Mizoram. He warned that this unchecked influx has overstretched public resources, disrupted the social fabric, and posed a direct threat to the identity and territorial integrity of Manipur.
He further alleged that a major mistake occurred between 2006 and 2008 when the then Congress-led state and central governments signed a Suspension of Operations agreement with Myanmar-based armed groups, which worsened the illegal immigration situation.
