Both projects are part of a broader initiative under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI).

In a major push to transform Meghalaya into a top tourist destination, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has announced two ambitious projects worth Rs. 198.54 crore.

These initiatives include the development of Umiam Lake as an iconic eco-tourism hub and the establishment of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) infrastructure at Mawkhanu, Shillong. Both projects aim to create world-class tourist attractions, generate over 2,600 jobs, and decongest Shillong by promoting alternative travel destinations.

The Umiam Lake project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 99.27 crore, will establish a Craft Village, Food Court, and allied eco-tourism infrastructure. Designed to cater to families, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers, this initiative aspires to make Umiam Lake one of India’s iconic eco-tourism destinations.

The project is expected to generate over 1,300 jobs and attract Public-Private Partnership (PPP) investments worth Rs. 400 crore. Proposed developments include a Music Center and Academy, Glamping facilities, a Visitor Center, and collaboration with Taj Hotels for luxury stays.

Similarly, the MICE project at Mawkhanu, also pegged at Rs. 99.27 crore, will focus on creating vibrant public spaces and infrastructure to position Mawkhanu as a premier destination for cultural events and conferences. Planned features include an amphitheater, sculpture park, public plaza, trails, and pathways, along with festival and multipurpose grounds.

The project will also create over 1,300 jobs and attract PPP investments of Rs. 425.25 crore, which will fund a luxury prefab resort, convention center, amusement park, golf-themed resort, and a golf club and course.

Both projects are part of a broader initiative under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI). The scheme, which funds 40 projects across 23 states at a total cost of Rs. 3,295 crore, aims to develop iconic tourist sites on a global scale.
