Beware, Tripura Is Using AI to Detect Tax Evaders, Warns CM Manik Saha

Saha underscored the importance of taxpayers in the state’s development, recalling that the GGST was introduced by the central govt in 2017.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday issued a stern warning to GST offenders, stating that the state has adopted artificial intelligence (AI) and modern technologies to detect tax evasion.
He cautioned that those found guilty would face legal action, including imprisonment.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ‘GST Jaagrookta Abhiyan’—a GST awareness campaign held at Pragnya Bhavan in Agartala—Saha emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing tax revenue and improving collection mechanisms.
After inaugurating the awareness programme along with Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Chief Secretary JK Sinha and other dignitaries, Saha highlighted the role of advanced technology in identifying tax fraud and expanding digital awareness among taxpayers.
“In order to boost revenue and improve tax collection, the state government is leveraging modern technologies. Digital awareness initiatives will be further expanded to facilitate smooth tax transactions,” said the Chief Minister while inaugurating the GST awareness campaign and GST Knowledge Centre.
Saha underscored the importance of taxpayers in the state’s development, recalling that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was introduced by the central government in 2017 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He noted that in the ongoing financial year (2024-25), Tripura’s annual budget stands at Rs 27,800 crore, with tax collections amounting to Rs 3,700 crore. Out of this revenue, 25% was allocated to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), while 10% was distributed among Urban Local Bodies across the state.
The Chief Minister also criticized the previous Left Front government for accumulating a debt of Rs 13,000 crore.
He stated that the current administration has also taken loans from various institutions to meet financial obligations, including salary payments and pension disbursements.
Saha announced that the annual budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year would be presented in the state assembly next month.
During the event, the Chief Minister honored prominent taxpayers and officials from different departments. He also launched an anti-fake registration campaign, unveiled a new GST logo, and introduced the ‘Kara Sathi’ WhatsApp chatbot to assist taxpayers.
With the state government tightening its grip on tax evaders, the implementation of AI-based surveillance is expected to enhance compliance and streamline Tripura’s taxation system.
