Bangladesh Unrest Hits Tripura Tourism, Says Minister on World Tourism Day

First Published: 27th September, 2024 18:16 IST

Tripura's Tourism Minister Sushanta Choudhury cited ongoing unrest in neighboring Bangladesh as a factor affecting the state's tourism sector

The ongoing unrest in neighboring Bangladesh is negatively impacting Tripura’s tourism industry, according to Tripura’s Tourism Minister Sushanta Choudhury. He made this observation during the state’s World Tourism Day celebrations, held on Friday, in the presence of Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and other dignitaries.

During his address, Choudhury stressed how political instability and conflict are major deterrents to tourism, not just in Bangladesh but globally. He referenced countries like Lebanon, Israel, Ukraine, and Russia as examples of regions where unrest has hurt tourism.

“Tourism declines wherever there is unrest,” Choudhury said, linking the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day Tourism and Peace to the current situation. He also reiterated the Tripura government’s commitment to developing the state’s tourism sector by upgrading destinations to global standards and identifying new spots to attract more visitors.

Highlighting tourism as a potential solution to unemployment in Tripura, the Minister noted that the industry can only flourish in a peaceful environment. He assured that the government is actively working to promote both tourism and peace in the state.

Governor Nallu echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the potential of Tripura’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage to draw tourists. He identified village tourism, river tourism, and the state’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries as key areas for development.

“These are Tripura’s assets, and we must utilize them to their fullest potential,” Nallu said, adding that Tripura remains one of the most peaceful states in the region, a fact that should appeal to tourists seeking serene destinations.

In recent years, Tripura has introduced several initiatives aimed at boosting tourism. These include the construction of wooden huts, the provision of boats for visitors, and the development of key attractions like temples and the historic Neermahal water palace.

Governor Nallu pointed to the increasing number of tourists visiting Tripura as a sign of progress and expressed optimism that these numbers will continue to rise.

“Tourists seek destinations where there is peace, and Tripura is a very peaceful state. We invite more visitors to explore the beauty and tranquility our state offers,” he added.
