Bangladesh Bank, the central bank of Bangladesh, has issued new currency notes without the image of the country’s founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The new currency notes of Taka 1,000, Taka 50 and Taka 20 released ahead of Eid-ul-Adha and in circulation from today, feature temples, monasteries and other places of importance.

The notes are printed on 100 percent cotton paper and feature a Royal Bengal Tiger watermark, denomination markings, and the central bank’s monogram. The Taka 20 note has a green tint and features Kantaji Temple and the Paharpur Monastery. The Tk 50 note, in dark brown, highlights Ahsan Manzil and Zainul Abedin’s Sangram. The Tk 1,000 note, coloured purple, showcases the National Memorial and the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Until now, all notes featured the portrait of late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who led Bangladesh win independence from Pakistan in 1971 until soldiers assassinated him and most of his family in a 1975 coup.

However, the new notes will now feature temples, monasteries and traditional landmarks of the country.
