Bangladesh Builds Embankment Within 10 Yards of Indian Soil in Tripura

Over 500 families in South Tripura at risk of getting submerged.
Amid growing hostilities with India, Bangladesh has constructed an embankment near the Muhuri river in Bilonia subdivision of South Tripura.
At certain places, the embankment is barely 10-50 yards away from Indian soil. This has triggered fear among the residents living in villages near the river.
More than 500 families living in Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar and Ishan Chandra Nagar Gram Panchayats both located on the northern bank of the Muhuri river face a high risk of flooding as the monsoon approaches. Even Bilonia town itself is now under threat of submergence.
Locals have reported that the embankment is 15 to 20 feet high and extends over a stretch of 1 to 1.5 kilometers. Critically, the structure lacks drainage outlets, leading to growing fears of waterlogging and flood-like conditions in the region.
They fear that the embankment, if not modified or removed, could block the natural flow of the river and push excess water into Indian villages during heavy rains.
Tensions are rising along the Indo-Bangladesh border, with residents demanding urgent intervention from the South Tripura district administration and the Government of India. They are calling for either the complete removal of the embankment or the inclusion of proper drainage systems to prevent a flood disaster.
According to reports, Bangladesh continues construction work round the clock using 10 to 12 excavators and bulldozers. Villagers worry that any delay in action could result in irreversible damage to their homes, farmlands, and livelihoods.
This incident follows a similar one in Kailashahar, Unakoti district, where Bangladesh raised an embankment close to the border with India, again triggering fears of cross-border flooding.
Tripura shares an 857-kilometer-long border with Bangladesh, and these repeated embankment activities on the Bangladeshi side point to a troubling trend that demands immediate diplomatic and administrative response.
