Noted Assamese litterateur and Padma Shri awardee Lakshmi Nandan Bora passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Thursday after suffering from COVID-19 complications. He was 89.
Suffering from ailments associated with old age, he was admitted to the hospital more than a week ago after he tested positive for COVID-19.
Bora, who was the former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha penned many award winning novels including Patal Bhairavi, Ganga Chilonir Pakhi and Kayakalpa. A recipient of Sahitya Academy Award and Saraswati Samman, Bora was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mourned the demise of the acclaimed novelist.
Taking to Twitter, Sarma said the last rites of Bora would be performed with full state honours.
“It has been decided to perform the last rites of late Lakshmi Nandan Bora with state honours. Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has been bestowed with the responsibilities to make the necessary arrangements,” Sarma stated.
“His death has left a void in the Assamese literary world,” former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.
