Assam University has suspended Ajit Kumar Jena, Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work, following multiple serious allegations of sexual harassment lodged against him by students of his department.
An official notification issued by the university today stated that several students came forward with complaints accusing Jena of misconduct, including sexually explicit remarks, intimidation, and abuse of power. In response, the university promptly sought a report from the Head of the Department of Social Work. Based on the departmental findings and the gravity of the accusations, a formal inquiry was initiated.
Pending the outcome of this investigation, the university directed Jena on May 5 to proceed on leave by applying under the appropriate category. He was also informed via email that a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed against him and was instructed to cooperate with the police and report to the authorities without delay.
However, the administration noted that Jena failed to comply with either instruction; he neither submitted a leave application nor presented himself to the police. In view of his non-compliance, the competent authority invoked Rule 10(1) of the Central Civil Services (CCS) Rules, 1965, and the relevant provisions of the university statutes to place Jena under suspension for 90 days with immediate effect.
As per the suspension order, which was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Jena is barred from entering the university campus or leaving the headquarters without prior approval. During this period, he will be entitled to a subsistence allowance as per applicable regulations.
The controversy surrounding Jena first gained attention on May 4 when several students lodged an FIR at the Assam University Police Outpost. In the complaint, they alleged that the professor had consistently engaged in inappropriate behaviour, making sexually explicit and defamatory comments, issuing threats to damage their academic records, and coercing them into providing false support.
The students further claimed that Jena used his position of authority to manipulate and humiliate them during lectures and personal discussions, emotionally. They assured the police of having substantial evidence, including mobile recordings, screenshots, call logs, and testimonies from witnesses, to support their claims.
The Officer-in-Charge of the university police outpost confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that the case is under active consideration. Following the filing of the FIR, the students held a protest outside the police station, demanding immediate and strict action against the professor. They carried placards and raised slogans urging the university to act decisively.
The administration’s swift action marks a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by students and ensuring a safe academic environment. The inquiry is ongoing.
