Assam RS Polls: BJP Receives 13 Applications, List Includes Names of Ex-Union Minister, Ex and Present MPs

Thirteen BJP politicians including former union minister Rajen Gohain, former Lok Sabha MPs Queen Oza and Rajdeep Rai and current Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das whose term is ending on June 14, have sent in their applications showing their interest to contest the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled for June 19.
Elections will be held for two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam which are falling vacant as the terms of the current MPs – Mission Ranjan Das of the BJP and Biren Baishya of the AGP, are expiring on June 14.
On Tuesday, the election committee meeting of Assam BJP was held in the presence of state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP President Dilip Saikia and members of the state election committee. The committee received 13 applications for the nomination for the two Rajya Sabha seats.
The list includes Dr Sunita Changkakoti, Ex-Chairperson, Assam State Child Welfare Board, Dr Padip Thakuria, Ex-State General Secretary, Dr Dayananda Borgohain, Ex-State Vice President, Dr Vijay Kumar Gupta, Ex- State General Secretary, Mridula Barkakati, Ex-National Vice President, Mahila Morcha, Bhaskar Dahal, Member and Ex- President Assam Gurkya Students’ Union, Kanad Purkayastha, State Secretary and Biswarup Bhattacharjee, Ex-State General Secretary, besides the names of Queen Oja, former Lok Sabha MP from Guwahati, Rajdeep Roy, former Lok Sabha MP from Silchar, Mission Ranjan Das and Rajen Gohain.
Assam has seven seats in the Upper House, six of which are controlled by the NDA (BJP 4, UPPL 1, AGP 1), with one is held by an Independent.
