The apprehended cadre has been identified as self-styled Sergeant Major Biju Bagti, a resident of Dibrugarh, Assam. The individual is an active cadre of ULFA (I) and the cadre was from Hachi camp in Myanmar. It is reported that he was trying to cross the Indo-Myanmar to reach Upper Assam.
“Our sources informed that it is likely he had come to collect an extortion amount from Over Ground Workers (OWGs) of ULFA (I),” Assam Rifles said.
When challenged by the security forces, the cadre tried to flee. The joint team immediately carried out search of the area and apprehended him from one of the jhum huts at 7 AM.
It is just this morning that there was an encounter with 7 UPFA-I cadres in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district where 4 OWGs were arrested.
