Assam Rifles Relocates Camp from Manipur University Campus, Fulfills Decades-Long Demand

The place was once the seat of administration for Manipur's rulers and served as the royal palace of Maharaja Gambhir Singh in the 1820s.
The 4th Assam Rifles camp, stationed within Manipur University’s campus for decades, has been relocated to the southern side of the Langthabal hillock, fulfilling a long-standing demand by students, locals, and historians.
The long-awaited removal of the Assam Rifles camp from the Manipur University campus was finally realised, marking a significant victory for the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) and other stakeholders. The camp, previously located at the Langthabal Old Palace inside the university campus, has been shifted to a site outside the campus, south of the Langthabal hillock.
Relocation ceremony was attended by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Major General Ravroop Singh (South IGAR), and local MLA Karam Shyam.
The removal of the camp fulfills decades of advocacy by university stakeholders and local residents, who argued that the presence of a military camp was incompatible with the educational and cultural essence of the site. The Langthabal hillock holds immense cultural and historical significance. It was once the seat of administration for Manipur’s rulers and served as the royal palace of Maharaja Gambhir Singh in the 1820s.
Speaking on the occassion, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed gratitude to the Assam Rifles for acknowledging the community’s sentiments and returning the site to public use. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between security forces and local communities, saying, “The forces tasked with protecting the nation must work in harmony with the local population, fostering mutual respect.”
Meanwhile, CM Biren Singh also mentioned recent developments related to the state. He referred to comments made by Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga regarding Manipur and brought attention to the concerning case of a man from Assam who went missing from the Army camp at Leimakhong in Kangpokpi district.
