This sparked public outrage after the video went viral and the Assam Police drew a lot of flak from people across the state.

It was an extremely insensitive and inhuman act. Few Assam Police personnel were seen dragging the bodies of a father and daughter who died in a road accident in Mangaldoi, Assam yesterday to the ambulance parked nearby.

This sparked public outrage after the video went viral and the Assam Police drew a lot of flak from people across the state.

What the police, who arrived at the accident spot did was, they put the mortal remains into a polythene bag because the impact of the accident was such that the bodies were pummelled beyond recognition and was almost sticking to the gravel on the road forcing the policemen to scrape the remains and put into the polythene bag, and instead of carrying the bag to the ambulance standing by, they dragged the polythene bag to the vehicle, to the utter shock and disgust of the people as it showed absolute disrespect to the dead.

Director General of Police, GP Singh was quick to respond. He ordered an enquiry into the incident. In a tweet, he wrote, “Reference road accident at Sipajhar, Darrang – An enquiry has been ordered to ascertain circumstances of the said incident.”

The victims, Mathura Nath Deka and his university-going daughter, Nandita, were returning home on a scooter for Diwali when their vehicle collided with a truck.

Eyewitnesses reported that after the initial impact, another truck ran over them, resulting in their immediate deaths.

The deceased were residents of Basab Nagar, Mangaldoi.
