The Assam Police is once again under fire as a serving constable has been arrested for his involvement in a major drug trafficking case in Patharkandi, Sribhumi district. The incident occurred just 24 hours after another police officer was accused of raping a mentally unstable woman, further shaking public trust in the force.
Acting on a reliable tip-off, a joint team of Patharkandi and Bazarichhara police launched an operation and intercepted a Pulsar bike at Mundmala Bypass. During a thorough search, the police recovered 29 packets containing a total of 325 grams of suspected heroin from the bike. The two individuals riding the vehicle, identified as Joynul Hussain and Jaharul Haque, were immediately taken into custody.
Police sources confirmed that the bike was on its way from Ahsimganj to Tripura. Both arrested men hail from the Ahsimganj and Cheragi areas, which fall under the jurisdiction of Patharkandi Police Station.
During interrogation, the duo revealed that the consignment belonged to Abul Hussain, a constable currently serving with the Assam Police. Based on the information, police swiftly arrested Constable Abul Hussain from Nilambazar. He had been posted at the Sri Bhumi Police Reserve for the past few days.
The recovered heroin is estimated to have a street value of over Rs. 10 crore. Police have initiated a detailed investigation and are likely to make more arrests in the coming days.
The incident has once again raised alarming questions about the involvement of law enforcement personnel in serious crimes, just as the police department reels from the rape case involving another officer.
