Acting promptly after Poonam Singh, a woman from Lakhimpur in Assam married to a man from Rajasthan, sought help from Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to save her life, Assam Police got Amarchand Rathi (husband of Poonam) picked up by Rajasthan Police and action is being taken as per law, Assam DGP GP Singh informed.

“Reference recent video appeal of a gracious lady from Assam located in Rajasthan – The gracious lady is originally from Bihpuria, Lakhimpur and married to one Amarchand Rathi of Nokha in 2007. The lady had gone to Rajasthan in Oct 2023 and had lodged an FIR in Nokha PS vide 611/2023 u/S 498(A)/323/341/354(A) IPC. Amarchand Rathi is in Nokha police station currently and action is being taken per law. We are monitoring,” DGP GP Singh wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Poonam Singh in a Facebook Livestream on Monday alleged that she is being subjected to emotional and mental torture by her husband Amarchand Rathi and his family in Rajasthan. Unable to bear the torture and pain, Poonam Singh had sought help from Assam CM Sarma.

Poonam Singh who belongs to a poor family was married to Amarchand Rathi in 2007.

When she moved to Rajasthan with her husband after they were married, he deprived her of her status as his wife and marital bliss without giving her a reason. Since then, she has been living a life of despair for the past 17 years. She had also lodged an FIR with Rajasthan Police in October this year, but they had not responded, said Poonam.

“I am helpless. Ever since I moved to Rajasthan in 2017 after marrying Amarchand Rathi, I have been the victim of inhumane torture by him and his family members. I had taken up the matter with the Rajasthan Police as well, however, I have not received any help yet. I am alive today, but the situation is such, I might be killed tomorrow. I appeal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to rescue me from here and save my life,” she said in the Facebook Livestream.

She had urged the Assam government to rescue her as soon as possible as both her and her child’s lives are in danger.
