Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union Calls off Strike, Begins Transport of Petroleum Products to Meghalaya

At least 12 oil tankers have reached Shillong. The tankers are moving with Meghalaya Police protection
The Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union (APMU) has called off its strike and movement of oil tankers and LPG cylinder carrying trucks to Meghalaya have begun.
Speaking to Northeast Live, APMU general secretary, Ramen Das said, “We have called off our strike for now. We respect the government’s response. We had written to the government that special protection be given to the drivers and the trucks and tankers particularly in Ri Bhoi, Khasi Hill districts and West Jaintia Hills district.”
Das informed that the movement of tankers have begun this morning and as many as 12 tankers carrying petroleum products have reached Shillong safely.
“We decided to resume the services because the government assured security and we do not want people to face any shortage but we will have to stop in case anything happens,” Das said.
“Meghalaya Police is escorting the tankers. The tankers are moving with full police protection. As of now the situation is normal and the tankers are moving safely. Supplies are normal,” Sanchit Surekha, general secretary of Petroleum Dealers Association Meghalaya told Northeast Live.
The Mazdoor Union had earlier decided not to ferry petroleum products to the three districts of Ri Bhoi, West Jaintia Hills and Khasi because the drivers feared for their lives while travelling to these districts post the Mukroh firing incident.
The Meghalaya government had given written assurance to the Mazdoor Union that the government would provide security to the tankers, Surekha said.
The Meghalaya government had directed all DCs and SPs to provide adequate security and ensure safe movement of the tankers and trucks carrying petroleum products to the state.
