The Meghalaya and Assam governments have decided to form a joint committee to address various issues related to the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM).
The development comes in the wake of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma making a controversial remark suggesting that graduates from USTM might be barred from appearing in recruitment exams for state government jobs in Assam.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma Wednesday said, “Assam CM and myself have decided during a verbal conversation that we will be putting up a small joint committee where officials from both the states will be there and will look into all the aspects of the different concerns that have been raised by Assam and others and in that we will take up the other matters also.”
He further said, “The chief secretaries of both the states are in touch to formalise the formation of this committee. And all these concerns will be taken up and we are hopeful that we are able to resolve most of the issues there.”
Sangma added that the government has received an official communication after his discussion with the Assam chief minister.
“We hope may be in a week’s time this committee should be up,” he added
He expressed optimism that the committee would address the issues effectively.
It may be mentioned, located in the 9th Mile area of Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya, on the outskirts of Guwahati, USTM has been a point of contention.
The Assam chief minister had blamed the University for contributing to the massive flooding in Guwahati and criticised its infrastructure, likening the gates with three domes to “Mecca-like” structures and accusing such institutions of “destroying the education system”.
