Assam: Kokrajhar CIT student who had gone for a bath in the river, drowns, body fished out

The body of Debjyoti Basumatary, a student of the Central Institute of Technology (CIT), Kokrajhar, who did not return to the hostel last night, was fished out from the Gaurang River this morning.
Debjyoti along with his 5 friends is said to have gone for a bath in the river yesterday as the institution was closed. While all his friends returned back to hostel, he did not show up till late at night. Institute officials alerted police after getting suspicious that he must have drowned.
Police immediately launched an investigation and also launched a search operation with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel to locate him.
After a day’s intense search, the SDRF team finally recovered the body this morning.
Chief Executive Member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and UPPL president, Pramod Boro also visited the scene. Promod Boro termed the incident as ‘unfortunate’ and condoled the death of the student.
In order to avoid any such incidents in the near future, vigilance will be increased in risky areas, and crowding around these areas will also be restricted, said Pramod Boro.
“Students lives are precious and the loss of even one life is a heart wrenching moment. Hence, I am deeply anguished to learn about the unfortunate demise of Dwipjyoti Basumatary, a student of Central Institute of Technology (CIT), Kokrajhar, who went missing after bathing in the Gaurang river. Today morning, had the unfortunate honour of being present when the body of the talented student was recovered by SDRF personnel. Our Govt will review the rules of institutions & colleges to ensure such incidents do not occur again. I convey my sincere condolences to Dwipjyoti’s family members, friends & well-wishers. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace,” Pramod Boro wrote on X.
