Assam govt’s over Rs 18,000 crore plan to beat the floods and keep the state safe

Assam for ages have been battling floods. The state, every year is battered and bruises by floods. Every year floods leave behind a trail of devastation and destruction. Human lives, cattle, livestock, crop and property are lost. It is an annual phenomenon for Assam. But this time the Assam government is all geared up. In a significant stride towards combating the issue of floods, the Assam government has undertaken a systematic and scientific approach to repair and construct river embankments in the last two years.
Taking to Twitter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “In last 2 yrs, we have made significant progress to help achieve our promise of a flood-free Assam. 1,000 kms of embankments being constructed on a priority basis. Rs 10,000 cr roadmap for strengthening river basins, prevent erosions & flood fighting materials.

The implementation of innovative measures such as the utilization of geo bags and other scientific applications has paved the way for a flood-free Assam.
With an unwavering focus on addressing the root causes of flooding, the Assam Government has embarked on an ambitious plan to construct 1,000 kilometres of embankments on a priority basis.
To support this endeavour, a substantial sum of Rs 5,300 crore has been allocated for the Assam Integrated River Basin Management Programme.
Recognizing the immense challenges posed by the Brahmaputra River, the Assam Government has allocated Rs 2,400 crore specifically for flood and erosion management in the mainstream of the river.
In a testament to the government’s commitment to action, a remarkable 41 breaches that occurred during the devastating floods of 2022 have already been successfully closed. The administration is currently prioritizing the closure of 108 critically vulnerable breaches to bolster the state’s resilience against future flood events.
Furthermore, realizing the need for well-equipped flood-fighting capabilities, the Assam Government has allocated Rs 1,000 crore for the procurement of flood-fighting materials.
