Assam Govt Files Plea Before SC-Appointed CEC To Probe Hill Cutting Amid Guwahati Floods

First Published: 21st May, 2025 15:55 IST

The CEC is expected to respond to the Assam government's plea within the next two to three months.

With Guwahatians struggling and the city coming to a halt yet again due to urban flooding in several areas of the city, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that the state government has filed a plea before the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to inspect hill-cutting and environmental degradation in the areas surrounding the city, particularly across the border in Meghalaya.

The CEC is expected to respond to the Assam government’s plea within the next two to three months.

“Yesterday, while coming here, I noticed two more massive buildings coming up near the USTM. If this continues, Guwahati will be perpetually inundated in a few years,” Sarma said during a press briefing after a Cabinet meeting in Dergaon.

He acknowledged that despite ongoing efforts, a complete resolution to Guwahati’s flooding problem remains elusive. “Every year, we fill up empty spaces to construct buildings. There is no concrete solution to this problem,” he added.

Meanwhile, residents in various parts of Guwahati, including Rukminigaon, Hatigaon, and Wireless, were seen battling waterlogging after heavy rains. Normal life was thrown out of gear as school and office goers struggled to reach their destinations wading through waterlogged roads.

Public Health Engineering and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah visited several affected areas on Tuesday and assured that work is in progress to make Guwahati flood-free in the near future.
