Assam Govt Approves Rs 500 Cr Subsidy for APDCL to Offset Power Bill Cut

First Published: 6th May, 2025 17:25 IST

This financial support is to ensure that APDCL does not suffer any financial loss due to the tariff cut

The Assam Cabinet has approved a Rs 500 crore subsidy for the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) following the reduction of Rs 1 per unit in power tariffs starting April 2025.

This financial support is to ensure that APDCL does not suffer any financial loss due to the tariff cut.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, announcing the decision, said, “The subsidy package includes Rs 300 crore as a targeted subsidy for specific consumer categories and Rs 200 crore as a general subsidy.

CM Sarma further added that the government will review the possibility of an additional Rs 1 per unit reduction in power tariffs in November 2025 to provide greater relief to consumers.

The decision is expected to have a wide-reaching impact, especially for middle- and lower-income households, and aligns with the government’s promise to make electricity more affordable without compromising on the health of the power sector.
