Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, accompanied by his wife, visited the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati today morning as the sacred shrine reopened for the darshan following the conclusion of the Ambubachi Mela.
Joining thousands of devotees atop the Nilachal Hills, the Governor offered prayers at the revered Shaktipeeth, marking the end of the four-day Nivriti, which symbolises the goddess Kamakhya’s annual menstruation period.
Speaking to the media, Governor Acharya said, “I prayed for the realization of Viksit Bharat and for strength to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his mission to advance India’s development. The arrangements at the temple have been well-organised to ensure smooth darshan for devotees.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also extended his wishes. He wrote on X, “As the doors of Maa Kamakhya open to devotees in Nivriti, which marks the completion of the 4-day #Ambubachi Mahayog, I pray to Maa Kamakhya for the welfare of Bharat. May Maa Kamakhya bless everyone with abundance and steer civilisation forward. जय मां कामाख्या.”
The Ambubachi Mela, held annually during the Assamese month of Ahaar (mid-June), celebrates the divine feminine energy and fertility. The temple was closed on June 22 after the Prabritti rituals and reopened on June 26 for devotees. Recognised as a major centre of Tantric worship, the Kamakhya Temple is one of the 51 sacred Shaktipeeths in India.
This year’s mela, which began on Sunday, drew lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad, transforming the temple complex into a vibrant confluence of devotion, mysticism, and cultural celebration.
