The rising water levels of the Siang River has created havoc in Jonai sub-division in Assam’s Dhemaji district with at least hundreds of families in 3 villages under the sub-division reeling under flood waters.
On Friday, a joint team of the State Disaster Response Force and journalists rescued more than a hundred people from the three villages. At least 132 people that included mostly children and women were rescued by the rescue team.
The rescued people were immediately shifted to hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, all the rescued people are now taking shelter at the Jonai Higher Secondary School, that has been turned into a relief camp for the flood victims.
Many villages at Bordoibam-Lotak in Assam’s Dhemaji district are now reeling under flood water. Rising waters of Koomtia River has submerged many villages as people are left stranded in the area.
However, the district administration allegedly have not taken stock of the situation of the people in the area. It is also being alleged that the administration of Gogamukh circle has been siphoning funds meant for flood relief.
Rising water level of the Brahmaputra in various places of Assam has triggered grave concerns. In this regard, the Inland Water Transport department has also stopped ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati from today.
It may also be mentioned here that the increase in water level of the Subansiri river too has put as many as 30 villages in Majuli under floods while authorities concerned have issued a red alert across the region.
Meanwhile, flouting all rules and regulations set by the Assam Government, local boats are plying on the Dichang River. The boats are plying without any life jackets.
The passengers that include mostly students travel from the Lalpaguri port to Namrup in these mechanised boats that have no life jackets.
On the other hand, many areas under Bokakhat-Mohkuma are also reeling under flood waters. Many villages under Golaghat district have submerged following excess water released by the NEEPCO in the Ranganadi river.
Flood waters have also submerged around 500 hectares of agricultural land. NEEPCO’s water release has also resulted to the flooding of many villages in Lakhimpur district.
