The meeting reviewed situation in Tinsukia, Sadiya, and Dibrugarh districts and preparations post lifting of AFSPA from Assam
In a significant development, Assam Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, conducted a review meeting with the Superintendents of Police in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts to assess the law and order situation.
The meeting also included discussions on preparations for the removal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Assam. During the meeting, necessary instructions were provided to ensure a smooth transition and continued safety of the region.
The review covered three key districts in Assam: Tinsukia, Sadiya, and Dibrugarh. Various aspects, including law enforcement efforts, crime statistics, and measures to enhance police welfare, were thoroughly examined. The government has undertaken substantial steps toward the removal of AFSPA, and the police department’s readiness for this transition was a central topic of discussion.
“The review meeting was held to discuss the law and order situation in three districts mainly Tinsukia, Sadiya and Dibrugarh. We discussed the police welfare measures. Assam Government has taken the steps to remove AFSPA and in our review meeting we discussed the preparation of our department and also noted down the suggestions from the officer-in-charge”, added GP Singh.
The Director General of Police and the officers in charge exchanged ideas and sought suggestions to facilitate this process. Assurance was given that all necessary support would be provided to address their requirements.
In addressing concerns about corruption within government departments, GP Singh emphasized that the top leadership is resolute in its stance against unethical behaviour. Action has been taken against individuals engaged in wrongdoing. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed the police department to swiftly address any wrongdoing and hold those responsible accountable. Singh noted that the vast majority of the police force, comprising 72,000 personnel, has performed commendably. In isolated cases where 25 to 30 people were found guilty of misconduct, appropriate action has been taken to maintain the integrity of the department.
“When the top leadership is very clear that aberrant behaviour is not acceptable we also won’t tolerate such acts. We are clear on taking action against crime. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed me to take action against those found guilty”, added GP Singh.
