Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that certain Congress leaders are deliberately trying to disrupt law and order in Guwahati.
Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah, former party president Ripun Bora and several other Congress leaders were arrested by the Guwahati Police today.
They were arrested in connection with the violent clash between Congress workers and police during the party’s ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ protest held in Guwahati on Wednesday which led to the death of one party worker.
The Congress staged the protest, with over 1,000 participants near the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati, without police permission.
The demonstration turned tragic when Congress workers clashed with the police, leading to the death of party worker Mridul Islam, who fell ill during the protest and passed away after being taken to the hospital.
In response to the incident, the Congress filed a FIR against the police at the Latasil Police Station, accusing them of being responsible for the death of their party worker.
While the Congress was up in arms against the district administration and police over the incident, Guwahati police commissioner Diganta Barah on Wednesday said that no force was used against the protestor and Congress staged the protest unlawfully.
Late last night, the Guwahati police filed a suo moto case, charging Congress with staging the protest unlawfully and without proper authorization.
Following this, orders were issued for the arrest of key Congress leaders involved in the protest.
Bhupen Borah had been taken to the 10th Assam Police Battalion Headquarters in Kahilipara after the arrest.
Speaking on the arrests, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that certain Congress leaders are deliberately trying to disrupt law and order in Guwahati.
He said, “At least 2-3 Congress leaders are currently engaged in a race as to who among themselves would become the supreme leader of the party in the state. In pursuit of their personal ambitions, these leaders are holding the public hostage, acting out of vested interests rather than genuine concern for the people.”
Chief Minister Sarma said that his government will not allow anyone to take things into their own hands which might lead to a law and order situation in Guwahati.
