Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the Tricolour in Dibrugarh during the 76th Republic Day celebrations, marking the first time the city hosted the state’s official Republic Day event. In his address, the Chief Minister stated that Assam has transformed into a safe state, free from curfews, boycotts, and untoward incidents, making it an attractive destination for investors, tourists, and citizens alike.
“Once shrouded in curfews and boycotts, Dibrugarh today stands proudly as the center of Republic Day celebrations in Assam. This remarkable journey reflects the strength of the world’s greatest Republic—Bharat,” Sarma wrote on social media platform X.
The Chief Minister hailed the occasion as a “red-letter day” for Dibrugarh and highlighted his government’s efforts to develop the city into a major urban hub. Sarma announced that construction work for a legislative assembly in Dibrugarh would commence on January 25, 2026, and from 2027, the city would host an annual session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Additionally, Dibrugarh will be elevated to a municipal corporation, becoming the second such in the state.
Speaking about the state’s broader development plans, Sarma revealed that within the next three years, Dibrugarh would emerge as a fully developed city. He also announced plans to construct an express highway between Guwahati and Silchar, which will reduce travel time from eight hours to just five hours.
The Chief Minister further highlighted the state’s focus on education, stating, “By April this year, Assam will have 10 new universities, reaffirming our commitment to transforming the state into a hub of education and learning.”
Sarma also unveiled plans to develop Tezpur and Silchar into cities with enhanced infrastructure. “Tezpur will emerge as the cultural capital and will house a Raj Bhawan, while Silchar will host a mini secretariat and the Chief Secretary’s Office,” he said.
