Assam Cong leader Ripun Bora endorsed Elizabeth Colburn was on the payrolls of Pakistani NGO
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday made a fresh attack on Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over his alleged links with Pakistan. Gathering ammunition from a press conference of Congress leader Ripun Bora, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that senior Congress leader Ripun Bora has confirmed that his party MP Gaurav Gogoi’s British wife had been on the payroll of the Pakistan Government, raising alarming questions about national security.
Infact, Chief Minister Sarma stated that Assam Police will record the statement of Congress leader Ripun Bora and take further action.
Taking to his social media handle X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that “Yesterday, senior Congress leader Sri Ripun Bora made a startling confession — he admitted that the British wife of Hon’ble MP Sri Gaurav Gogoi was, in fact, on the payroll of the Pakistan Government. If this is indeed true, it raises deeply alarming questions about national security. The continued presence of an individual linked to a hostile foreign state—right within the inner circles of a sitting Member of Parliament—poses a serious and unacceptable threat to the integrity of India’s institutions. We were not previously aware of these shocking details. Now that this revelation has come to light, the matter is being examined with the seriousness it demands. National security is non negotiable. We will record statement of Sri Bora and take further action in this matter.”
So, what was the statement which Congress leader Ripun Bora made during a press conference on Sunday which gave fresh ammunition to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarm to up the ante?
Ripun Bora said that “Yes by profession a person can work with an NGO. The wife of Gaurav Gogoi is an employee of an international NGO and for the sake of her profession, she went to Pakistan for the NGO. She had taken salary from Pakistan Government. That does not prove that she became a Pakistani agent and spy.”
With this fresh development, the matter has taken a different turn.
Assam Government earlier constituted a Special Investigation Team to investigate the alleged links of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his British wife Elizabeth Colburn with Pakistan. According to Assam Chief Minister, the Special Investigation Team will submit the report by 26 September this year and after that Assam Government will decide whether to hand over the report to the Central Government for a detailed inquiry looking at the seriousness of the matter pertaining to the national security.
Meanwhile, as the SIT is investigating the matter, there has been a series of allegations and counter allegations between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Congress party.
Political pundits predict that the issue is going to snowball into a major political matter in the run up to the 2026 Assam Assembly Election.
